Sleep Paralysis Research
Early Findings
The past couple of weeks has been a flurry of activity, as I've been speaking to many of you about your sleep paralysis and other unexplained ‘extraordinary’ experiences that have been taking place.
For those of you that I've met, I send my sincere appreciation for the sharing of your experiences. Whilst my research is nowhere near complete, I thought I'd share with you a few of the initial findings, which I'm sure you'll agree are extremely interesting.
People that I've spoken to have come from the USA, Africa, Canada, the UK and Asia. The gender spread is equally mixed and the ages are from 19 - 61 years old.
21 participants have been interviewed so far and all of them, with the exception of one, agreed that the sleep paralysis episodes are a spiritual or paranormal experience as opposed to being caused by a neurological disorder or REM sleep problem.
It is within the framework of spirituality, spirits, the paranormal or supernatural that the experience is rationalized.
Each person considered themselves to be ‘spiritual’, and whilst the experiences are terrifying in nature, they've shaped their lives significantly. Each (with the exception of one) sees themselves as having psychic abilities and advanced senses that are used in everyday interactions for their personal benefit.
The experiencers see themselves as being chosen to have sleep paralysis, and when asked why they think they were chosen, they don't know.
The entities that are experienced are referred to casually as ‘they’ by the participants that saw them. I should say that not everyone saw entities during their episodes. Some persons heard sounds, could see movements or felt a foreboding presence. Sensations experienced during sleep paralysis include being tickled, touched, and poked and everyone referred to the sense of foreboding, evil, impending doom or harmful vibe or aura.
One thing that I found interesting was the common reference to tunnels and the speed at which persons would go through a tunnel during the episode. In terms of sounds, the static sound like that of a radio being tuned, was also commonly expressed by participants.
Another striking feature is the consistency amongst different people who don't know each other, who are from different parts of the world, all sharing the same story with me, to the extent that the same language is being used, for example, in the case of the ‘tuning a radio station’ the ‘tunnels’ and ‘speed’.
